In this food video, our guest blogger Boxofspice is showing you how to make an Indian lentil soup!
1/2 cup red lentils or masoor dal
2 cups water
For the tempering:
1 onion, finely chopped
1 tomato finely chopped
1 clove garlic, finely chopped
1 tsp coriander powder
1 tsp turmeric powder
1 tsp red chili powder
1 tbsp oil
Salt to taste
Handful cilantro leaves
Wash the lentils in cold running water. Then put them in a pressure cooker and add the 2 cups water. Add some salt, close the lid and set it on high heat. Once you get 2-3 whistles, turn down the heat and let cook for around ten minutes. Switch off the heat and let cool down and make the tempering.
In a small pan, add the oil and let it medium hot. Add the chopped onions, and let them brown a little. Add the chopped garlic and the tomatoes. Cook on medium high heat, till the oil starts leaving the sides. At this point add all the dry spices and continue to cook. This will take some 10-15 minutes.
Once the tempering is ready, put the pressure cooker with the lentils back on the fire and add the tempering mix. Stir to mix well.
Serve piping hot with the cilantro leaves as garnish.
